Homelessness has a profound impact on children’s health and education, as well as parents’ abilities to find a job and stay employed. Homeless children have twice the rate of emotional and behavioural issues -including anxiety, depression, and delinquency. Families can become homeless for various reasons. Today’s fragile economy means that more families are unemployed, earning lower wages, or have lost a home due to foreclosure. Other factors – such as domestic violence, medical crises, and mental health or addiction – make families vulnerable. Even in the best economic times, affordable housing can be hard to find for families without skilled jobs. The challenge is to provide affordable and good housing especially in the informal settlements. Similarly, security is a key ingredient of development and as such each and every community or person needs a safe environment in order to realize development. A person’s home or unit is typically his or her largest physical investment, thus protecting property value should be a main concern of any community. Insecurity is also related to lack of opportunities hence people turn to stealing and muggings as a way of life.
Eliud Owalo Foundation in collaboration with several stakeholders is working on provision of good and affordable, secure shelter to the communities within which it operates. The foundation seeks to provide adequate housing and fit for human habitation.
